How to create an Executive Summary of the Income Statement

To create an executive summary of the income statement, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Reports.

  2. Click the plus icon and select Dynamic Report.

  3. Choose the appropriate Reporting Area (e.g., Financial), then click OK.

  4. Drag the Company dimension to the Page axis.

  5. Drag the Account dimension to the Row axis. Select high-level summary accounts from this dimension. Common examples include:

    • Total Revenue / Sales

    • Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

    • Gross Profit (Revenue – COGS)

    • Operating Expenses (e.g., Sales & Marketing, G&A, R&D)

    • Operating Income (EBIT)

    • Other Income / Expenses

    • Pre-Tax Income

    • Income Tax Expense

    • Net Income

  6. Drag the Time and Scenario dimensions to the Column axis.

  7. Click Formula, then select Insert Row/Column to add calculated lines for additional metrics, such as Gross Margin %, Net Margin %, or variance columns (e.g., Actual vs. Budget).

  8. Click Run to view the report.
