Metadata Download
Before creating a model with Direct Access to Structured Planning, users must perform a Metadata Download. Even if traditional Structured Planning integration has been used previously, running the Metadata Download ensures that the HACPM_Financial and HACPM_Workforce models are updated with the latest metadata.
The Metadata Download generates source models named HACPM_Financial and HACPM_Workforce. These are reserved models that cannot be modified or deleted. Users can view their dimensions and members in Spotlight Web or SpotlightXL.
Creating the Model
When creating a model, selecting Direct Access to Structured Planning will automatically populate the dimensions. Since data is not stored in Dynamic Planning, there are no options for Key and Value types. For best results, avoid renaming dimensions at this stage to ensure the automatic creation of the map.
After saving the model, a map is automatically created if no dimensions are renamed. By default, the map is set to download all members for all dimensions. To limit the data available to users, adjust the map before generating the model. This adjustment allows users to filter dimensions and control the amount of data retrieved. Note that data limitations cannot be applied after the initial model generation.
See How to Edit a Metadata Map for Direct Access to Structured Planning.
Notes:
When initially working with a model connected to Structured Planning, users can download all members of all dimensions to become familiar with how Dynamic Planning operates. As users begin to focus on specific business use cases, they can optionally adjust the map to include only the metadata relevant to the particular slices of data they need.
The Map Type, which is set to Metadata, cannot be modified.
Data Dimension Security
Data dimension security defined within Structured Planning is respected by Dynamic Planning. However, all metadata for the Workforce cube is visible to users in Dynamic Planning, except for the Scenario dimension. For example, if a user has access only to the East region, they will see all regions in the Dimension list boxes but will only see data for the East region. Users will also only see scenarios they have access to in Structured Planning (navigate to Maintenance > Admin > User Management > select user > edit user > More > Scenario Access).
Generating the Model
Before Generation: The menu options available are the same as for standard models in Dynamic Planning: Generate and Delete Model.
After Generation: The available menu option changes to Clear Model. The Lock Model option is not available because the model is automatically locked upon generation and cannot be unlocked.
The generated model is of type Master. A calculation is automatically created to refresh the model, including commands for Download Metadata, Unlock Model, Clear Model, Generate Model, and Lock Model. This calculation is provided for convenience, allowing users to manually refresh the metadata if needed.
In the Application Statistics view, the model will display 0 records and 0 bytes of data storage used because Dynamic Planning does not store data; it only stores metadata as defined in the map, along with any views or reports created.
Once generated, the model cannot be converted back to a regular model without Direct Access to Structured Planning.
Modifying Models with Direct Access to Structured Planning
Use the Model menu commands to view Dimensions, Map, Calculation, Model Lookup, and Model Validation.
No aggregation calculations or other calculations are needed because the model retrieves all data directly from Structured Planning.
The model is read-only, meaning users cannot save data, run Breakback, create or use formulas, maps, scopes, calculations, or perform import/export operations. Data cannot be written back from Dynamic Planning to Structured Planning.
Model permissions cannot be modified, and additional dimensions cannot be added.
Data Retrieval and Performance
Data is retrieved at runtime according to the metadata map created during model generation.
Metadata is refreshed when the model is generated, when the refresh calculation is run, or when a user clicks Save after changing the hierarchy in Structured Planning.
Data retrieval performance will be comparable to Structured Planning dynamic reports. Users can move data from Structured Planning into Dynamic Planning.
There are no limitations on report size, though very large reports may lead to performance degradation or timeouts. Views are limited by the Excel Analysis Cells count in Application Settings.
Change Data Tracking is not available because the model is read-only and intended for analysis and reporting.
Limiting the Model Size and Deleting the Model
Before deleting a model, consider making a backup to avoid losing any created views or reports. Use User Manage > Application Administration > Model Backup/Restore.
To delete a model with Direct Access to Structured Planning, go to Model > Setup, click Clear Model, and then Delete. Note that this operation will also delete all associated views and reports.
If the model's data is too extensive, users can limit the retrieved data by creating a new model with Direct Access to Structured Planning and adjusting the map to include only the data necessary for their business needs. While metadata cannot be modified after the initial model generation, creating a new model with a refined map is straightforward. Use Case
This view is designed to provide a comprehensive analysis of salaries for employees in the sales department for the 2025 planning scenario. It covers the entire year of 2025, offering a detailed overview of salary distribution. The view is filtered to include only the salary account, ensuring that only relevant financial information is presented. Data is organized by quarters, allowing users to track salary changes and distributions throughout each quarter of the year.
Once the view is set up, it acts as a key reference for generating various reports. Users can utilize this view to create detailed salary reports that are valuable for internal reviews, budget planning, and financial analysis.
While a specific report format is selected here for demonstration purposes, users have the flexibility to customize their reports in Excel Report as well. They can tailor the reports to meet specific requirements, ensuring that the same detailed data and structure are maintained across different report formats. This adaptability allows users to effectively analyze and communicate salary information in the format that best suits their needs.
